Grocery bags galore!

When I decided to start up the studio, I decided that I would only sell items that I believe in, are made of good quality fabric and that I think are useful. As I mentioned in the last post, over the last year I’ve made quite a few reusable grocery bags.  I have been so pleased with their performance that I’ve decided to make some to sell.  (Our Etsy Store is launching soon! Stay tuned for more information!!)

One thing I’ve experienced over the last year, however, is a wide variety of reactions when using our homemade bags.  In Joann and craft stores, most clerks think the bags are great and have no problems using them.  In other cases, I’ve gotten reactions ranging from intrigued to downright put out. When I’ve encountered someone who’s hesitant or somewhat resistant to using the bags I bring with me, I’ve learned to be politely firm. I explain that while I appreciate the store offering their own bags, I would prefer to use my own reusable bags instead of having to recycle their plastic bags.  Most people seem to react rather well once I’ve explained myself. I’ve had a few who’ve been somewhat skeptical or indifferent.  But the explanation itself generally diffuses any stubborn or annoyed clerks.

Do you use fabric totes for groceries or shopping?  Have you had any strange experiences with clerks or bagging associates unwilling or hesitant to use the bags you’ve brought? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
